WORLD Food Day began a week early for 207 students at the Batinikama College in Labasa because of tight examination schedules.
Students and staff at the school this week marked the event with art displays and the setting up of an information booth at the school compound to raise awareness on healthy eating.
College principal Rajeshwar Nand said the actual celebration would begin next week.
"However, we have decided to start early this week because of examination schedules which were tight and we did not want to disturb the students' study schedules," Mr Nand said.
"Themed Sustainable Food System for Food Security and Nutrition, our students had put up an information booth and other displays focusing on the theme.
"We do not want to forget the day because it is an important event that is held annually to raise awareness on the importance of food that we consume as it affects our health." Head of the college's agriculture department Karan Chand said children needed to be taught about the importance of nutrition because of the rise of NCDs.
