DREKETI created history by lifting the Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National Football League premier title for the first time after beating Nasinu 3-1 in the third match playoff at Govind Park in Ba yesterday.
The playoff was held at the neutral venue after the home and away series ended in a tie.
Striker Melvin Kumar proved to be the hero for the Vanua Levu based side scoring a hat trick in the encounter.
It wasn't a result that the Nasinu team was expecting after being unbeaten previously.
With the win Dreketi foiled Nasinu's chance of making a clean sweep of the premier titles.
Nasinu won the premier titles in the Vodafone Fiji FACT and the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants earlier this season.
Melvin was on fire scoring the three goals within the first 20 minutes.
His goals came in the 4th, 8th and 20th minute. Kaushik Kumar scored Nasinu's lone goal in the 17th minute.
Dreketi, under the guidance of Johan Leewai, played with a lot of confidence. Melvin was a thorn for the Nasinu defenders with his stylish footwork.
Dreketi team manager Mukesh Kumar said they wanted to win the Inter-District Competition title.
"We are happy with the boys as they played really well," he said.
"We came in prepared for the game. It is the first time that Dreketi has won the premier division league. I would like to thank the boys for the job well done.
"Melvin did not play the last game because of sickness.
"He was one of our outstanding players and combined well with Anish Khem.
"The next aim is win the IDC title. We are in a tough pool with Rakiraki and Tavua."
Nasinu coach Abdul Zaman expressed disappointment saying their sloppy defence allowed Dreketi to score.
'We are very much disappointed because we dominated possession," Zaman said.
"Our defenders made a few blunders in the first half which Dreketi capitalised on.
"This is our first loss for the season. We will have to take the defeat because we can't win all the time.
"This will be the same team that will be playing in the IDC so we will have to work on our weak areas one of which is our defence."
