FIVE families of Nukuilau Village in Navosa were overcome with emotion after they were handed the keys to their newly-built homes last Tuesday.
The homes were part of the 30 new homes constructed by the government as part of its cyclone rehabilitation program in the highlands.
The families lost their homes to Tropical Cyclone Evan last December.
Village headman and new homeowner Esala Naba thanked the government.
"Our children are excited with our new home and we thank the government for their great assistance," he said.
Fellow homeowner Joseva Vunibobo echoed similar sentiments.
Nadroga-Navosa provincial administrator Peni Koro apologised to the villagers for the delay in the construction of homes.
He said many faced a similar situation and resources were stretched.
"It's almost a year now but this is just a small bit of aid from your government to help you rebuild your lives," Mr Koro said.
"Government constantly continues to look at various ways to assist all Fijians who lost their belongings in the cyclone."
