STAND-IN Fiji 7s coach Alifereti Dere says Fiji will have to work on retaining possession during kick-offs in today's knockout stages of the Fiji Centennial International 7s tournament at the ANZ Stadium.
Dere had a discussion with new coach Ben Ryan after Fiji's pool matches where the Englishman highlighted some of the weaknesses the side needs to iron out.
Dere is pleased with the performance of some players and says the tournament is a perfect build up for Ryan to assess the squad.
"He (Ben Ryan) was sitting and assessing the boys through the pool games, without mentioning anything until our final team talk," Dere said.
"Ryan stated that the kick-offs is an area where we need to work on before tomorrow (today)," adding that the side needed to improve its performance in the quarter-finals.
Fiji plays the Solomon Islands in the opening quarter-final at 11am today.
"I think the players needed to be more focused on the game and not to be carried away playing weaker opponents.
"We really need to lift our game."
In the other quarter-finals, Cook Islands plays American Samoa at 11.22, Papua New Guinea battles Australia at 11.44 and Samoa takes on Tuvalu at 12.06pm.
