DESPITE the US Government shutdown, the Embassy of the United States of America in Suva opened the online registration for the DV Program also known as the Green Card Lottery yesterday.
The annual DV program is administered by the Department of State and makes available 50,000 permanent resident visas to persons meeting the simple, but strict eligibility requirements.
In a statement the US Embassy in Suva said the registration would be open until Sunday.
It stated that applications would only be accepted electronically through the designated website.
"Applicants are strongly advised not to wait until the last week of the registration period to enter as heavy demands may result in delays and difficulties in registering online," it said.
"To enter the DV program and be awarded an immigrant visa to the United States, you must meet either the education or work experience requirement of the DV program."
The statement said family applications must include spouse, and all unmarried children under 21 years of age, with the exception of children who are already US citizens or legal permanent residents.
"Failure to fill out the form correctly will result in disqualification from the program."
The statement said registration was free of charge.
