THE permanent secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries is the only authorised person who can permit the slaughter of turtles.
Principal fisheries officer North Jovesa Naceva said no one else was allowed to take, kill, sell, destroy, dig up or export turtles, turtle shell, eggs, flesh or derivatives of any turtle species.
"The Fiji government is committed to turtle protection and conservation within the Fiji waters," he said.
"Those found killing or slaying turtles during the spawning period will be fined $500 or three months imprisonment for harvest or killing of turtle and $20,000 or five years for selling sea turtle or turtle meat.
Mr Naceva said people needed to consider the life cycle of turtles.
