SAMOA will be testing its new players in the FORU Oceania 7s tournament which will run concurrently to the Fiji Water Centennial International 7s at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
The team which arrived yesterday will be using this weekend's tournament as their final trial for selection to the squad for the Gold Coast 7s.
Samoa will be skippered by Patrick Fa'apale and supported by other experienced players in Levi Asi Fa'amatala and Sani Niue.
Coach Viliamu Punivalu said his side had a good hit out at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna where they won gold medal in the 7s rugby competition.
"We tested a group of young, exciting players (at the mini games) so it's really pleasing to include another set of new players for this team," Punivalu told Talamua.com.
"The Oceania … is something completely different, so they know they are in for a real test.
"The good thing is we have a core of players who know and understand well the pressure of these competitive environments."
Punivalu said the onus was on the new players to perform well and remain in contention for a place in the team for the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series.
"The Oceania 7s will be a stepping stone for the new players and to monitor if they can swim the deep waters, these games also will be the final trials to select the final squad for the Gold Coast the following week."
Samoa is placed in Pool B of the Oceania 7s with Solomon Islands, American Samoa and Australia.
