THE Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA) will try and send teams to represent Fiji at future World University Games.
This year's FUSA competition begins today and administration manager and national treasurer Thakur Tara Singh said a meeting would be held next week to deliberate on the issue.
He said Fiji had only been represented in athletics for the world meet.
"We want to see teams from Fiji representing the nation in various sports," Singh said.
"So next week we will have a meeting where we will submit a proposal on the possibility of this idea.
"The idea is that the winning team from a sport represent the nation at the World University Games."
He says while finance will be a factor, there were avenues to make it a reality.
"In the past, FUSA used its funds to send athletes to the world competition.
"We don't have a sponsor to assist us financially but we won't let that dishearten us. We can try harder to find a sponsor to assist us in sending teams."
Singh said it was possible for Fiji to win team events at the World University Games.
"Sevens rugby and 15s rugby is a sport that Fiji can excel in. Sponsors or donors need to understand that tertiary students who are in sports can become the future of the sport in the country."
Meanwhile, only soccer and rugby will be played today.
"Rugby will be played at the USP grounds while soccer will be played at Ram Lakhan Park in Samabula."
University of Fiji, FNU Central, FNU West, FNU North, Pacific Regional Seminary, USP Suva, USP Lautoka, USP Labasa and the Fiji School of Medicine are competing in 10 sports that are divided into 25 categories.
