VILLAGERS of Navosa in the Nausori Highlands continue to benefit from an almost eight-year long relationship with a tour operator which brings visitors to the area.
Unlike other village tours, Highland Scenic Eco Tours Fiji gives tourists an inside view of everyday life in a traditional Fijian village when they visit Navosa Village.
Village headman Simeli Koli said the tourists contributed financially to the village.
"The tours have allowed us to set up a trust account in which we can use the money to carry out village projects," he said.
"We set up the trust this year and we are looking to grow this money over the next five years."
Mr Koli said they planned to construct footpaths and boundary fences around the village.
"We are very grateful to Highland Scenic Eco Tours for giving us this opportunity to provide for our villagers and we have seen the great improvements that engaging them has brought to us."
Operated by husband and wife team, Howard and Paulini Politini, the scenic tour offers guests a one-hour drive through the Nausori Highlands to witness breathtaking views of the Nadi Valley.
Mr Politini said the tours were very community-driven and gave each guest a chance to witness village life.
"Since starting in 2006, we have had about 7500 guests join us on the scenic tour and every time they have been overwhelmed by their visit to the local communities and the schools that are part of our program," he said.
"We try and maintain personal and intimate interactions between visitors and villagers and schoolchildren and from there the guests go a step further by giving back to these communities in their own way."
