IF the US Government shutdown is prolonged, Fiji and other Pacific Island countries can be affected through tourism, remittances and trade.
Economist Professor Biman Prasad said this would be seen as uncertainty in the global financial markets and could cause concern among major trading partners of the US, such as European Union.
However, he said it was too early to speak about the impact on Fiji.
"I don't think we will be directly and immediately affected," Prof Prasad said.
"It all depends on how long the shutdown will last."
Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association vice president Joseph Dellagatta said US visitor arrivals accounted for only eight per cent.
