THE Chinese Embassy celebrated 64 years of Chinese independence with a ceremony attended by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau on Monday evening.
Chinese ambassador to Fiji Huang Yong said despite the domestic turmoil China faced in the early 20th century, the country had made 'astonishing' progress in economic and social development since independence on October 1, 1949.
"Today, the Chinese nation is closer than ever to achieving the Chinese dream," Mr Huang said.
"The Chinese dream is the long cherished aspiration of successive generations of sons and daughters of the Chinese nation, for prosperity of the country, for renewal of the nation and for happiness of the people."
He said China regarded Fiji as an equal partner and equal member of the world community.
He added he was delighted to see the China-Fiji relations reaching new heights this year.
Mr Huang also said the embassy commended the new Constitution of Fiji.
"We support the government and people of Fiji in choosing their own development path in line with their own national conditions."
China gained independence in 1949.
