HOTELS and resorts along the Coral Coast contribute about 75 per cent of all garbage dumped at the Sigatoka landfill.
This was revealed by Sigatoka Town Council special administrator Jay Whyte.
Speaking to ratepayers and business leaders last week, Mr Whyte informed the forum the council was working with Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa to construct a garbage disposal plan to reduce the amount of waste being dumped annually.
"According to research done by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, tourist properties contribute close to 75 per cent to our landfill," Mr Whyte said.
"So, we are working very closely with the tourist operators to reduce the amount and type of garbage being dumped.
"Our team at the Health Department in the council is working with Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa to create a pilot project that we could possibly roll out to other resorts.
"We thank resort GM Michael Monks for his support in this venture."
Mr Whyte said plans previously announced by the council on the identification of a new dump site had been shelved.
