A TEACHER and a student will be advocates of social issues during the 2013 Vodafone Gold and Water Carnival that kicks off at Garvey Park in Tavua today.
Balata High School teacher Ashmika Devi and AD Patel College seventh former Krishtina Reddy are among the seven contestants in the fete.
Miss Devi, 26, a biology and chemistry teacher said students faced many problems in school.
"One of the issues I'm hoping to bring to light is HIV and AIDS cases in schools and especially among the younger generation," she said.
"Awareness of this issue needs to be raised and teachers particularly play a vital role in the lives of students."
Miss Reddy, however, said she would be advocating against child abuse, which she believed was one of the most pressing issues in the country.
"Child abuse is a horrible thing and I want to raise this to the public because they need to be aware," the 18-year-old said.
