THE only two qualified table tennis umpires in the country have been invited to officiate at the Para Table Tennis Championships in Australia in November.
Suva Table Tennis Association president Pushpa Wati and Shri Sharma will be part of the event in Canberra from November 9 to 16.
Wati said they were fortunate to be invited and said it was a testament of their work in the country.
"We are really fortunate to be given the opportunity to umpire at such a tournament where only players with different disabilities will compete."
About five deaf players have been regulars on the Suva table tennis circuit and she said they wanted to see how good the players at the international competition are. "Suva Table Tennis, working under the Fiji Table Tennis Association, encourages people from all walks of life to participate in this sport as it opens pathways for people to develop themselves and get opportunities to represent the country.
"The Paralympic Committee in Fiji is always welcome to join table tennis as there are always competitions like the one in Canberra.
"People on wheelchairs, people with handicaps and generally, people with disabilities are often left out of things and we would like to tell these people out there that they have a lot of potential and there are so many opportunities."
She said the Fiji Table Tennis had taken the initiative to take the sport to places such as the Hilton Special School under its outreach program.
