ABOUT $1.2million has been allocated for the construction of six navigational beacons at Malau Wharf in Labasa.
Divisional engineer works Northern George Tavo yesterday said officials have already constructed four beacons.
He said they were now working on another two.
"The beacons have been constructed to assist ships travelling to and from the jetty at night," Mr Tavo said.
"The construction work began early this month and we expect to complete it by the end of the year.
"This is a $1.2m project and it is part of our development plan for this year."
Meanwhile, Mr Tavo said they also completed renovation works on all the lighthouse towers in Savusavu and Taveuni.
"We upgraded the towers last year and now our focus is on the beacons.
"For now, we will just install the beacons at Malau and once this is complete, we will identify other areas for such installation."
