TAVUA lass Titilia Rogalivatu struggled to hold back tears as she was crowned Miss Sugar 2013 on Saturday night at Churchill Park.
Miss Rogalivatu was speechless when she received the crown and thanked the crowd and her family for their support throughout the festival.
"I didn't actually think I would win because I just joined the Sugar Festival to have some fun," she said.
"But then, once I participated, I knew I was the face to portray those people who think they are misfits and who always look down on themselves. They should prove themselves and just believe.
"This is what I did and I am glad I believed in myself.
"There were a lot of critics but I'm glad I have proven them wrong."
Sponsored by Wilderness Amusement and Rides, Miss Rogalivatu said she was glad she was able to get her message about self-appreciation out to the young people.
She said young people faced self-esteem issues a lot and one of the ways she had been able to overcome that was by knowing she could do her best, something she encouraged other young people to do.
"Overcoming obstacles is all part of life and that's what I did tonight."
Miss Autocare Forzia Ali was crowned Miss Charity 2013, Miss Potent Electric Ashnita Lata won the Miss Personality title and Miss Red Cross Alice Tanua was awarded for Best Talent.
