CAKAUDROVE paramount chief Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has welcomed the proposed mini-hydro project scheduled to be constructed on Taveuni soon.
Ratu Naiqama made the remark to government officials and representatives of construction company, Hunan Construction Engineering Group, when they visited Somosomo last week to carry out various inspections at the project site.
In an Information Ministry statement, Ratu Naiqama said the people of Taveuni would now have a sustainable and reliable source of power and energy.
He said the project would benefit villagers and communities who relied on diesel or other forms of energy.
"We are looking forward to the works that will commence on the island soon," he said.
"We acknowledge the work that will be carried out as it's critical to the development of the people."
Ratu Naiqama said the project would also boost commercial and investment activities on the island.
"At the same time, the project will positively impact several large villages and settlements in the Somosomo area, the main commercial centre, hotels, boarding schools and the Waiyevo Government Station," Ratu Naiqama said.
Business houses have also applauded the project, saying it would boost business on the island.
The project is co-shared between the government and the Chinese Government with primary funding of $50million by China.
