THE role of parents is paramount in the development of healthy children.
This was the message shared by assistant director Child Services Ela Tukutukulevu, who was guest speaker at the "Good Parenting for A Better Fiji" seminar held at the St Agnes Parish in Nabua last week.
"Research demonstrates time and time again that the environment in which children are raised significantly affects their intellectual, physical, social and emotional development," she said.
She called parents who encourage harmonious family life a "precious resource," but said many parents were not aware of the crucial role they played.
Child abuse continues to be an issue for the Ministry of Social Welfare, which recorded 317 cases last year.
The most common forms of child abuse in 2012 were sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect.
