SIX women and two men allegedly involved in corrupt dealings amounting to about $600,000 in 2010 appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.
Taniela Railala, Tavenisa Tavaga, Ana Laqere, Amelia Vunisea, Losalini Toroca, Vaciseva Laqai and Laisa Halafi, who were employees of the then Public Works Department, and Shelveen Narayan who is the director of Phoenix Hardware Engineering and General Supplies Limited in Suva, appeared before magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman yesterday.
They are jointly charged with causing a loss, which they allegedly committed between June and August in 2010.
In the first count, it is alleged that between June 23 and August 19, Mr Railala, Ms Tavaga, Ms Laqere, Ms Vunisea, Ms Toroca and Ms Halafi, while being employees of the then PWD, dishonestly caused a loss to the PWD by falsely facilitating the process of payments amounting to $8841.60 to Phoenix Hardware Engineering and General Supplies Ltd, and knowing the loss will occur or a substantial risk of the loss will occur.
In the second count in the same period, they allegedly committed the same act involving $47,205.10.
In count three, Ms Laqere and Ms Vunisea allegedly committed the same crime involving $179,930.95 to the same hardware company.
Mr Railala, Ms Tavaga, Ms Laqere and Ms Vunisea are charged with the same charge on the fourth count, which involved $40,647.68 to the same hardware company.
Mr Lakshman bailed the eight on a $1000 bond and advised them to choose a legal council of their choice.
