DEPUTY Commissioner of Police Ravi Narayan has been appointed acting commissioner of police.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro yesterday said the decision to appoint DPC Narayan was made by Defence Minister Joketani Cokanasiga in accordance with Part B Section 129 (6) of Chapter 6 of the Constitution.
Mr Narayan's appointment came into effect on September 18 and will run until a new Commissioner of Police is appointed.
When contacted yesterday, the acting commissioner said he would not make any comment.
An Information Ministry statement issued on Tuesday said the term of Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua had expired and the matter would be dealt with under the Constitution upon the return of Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
Commodore Bainimarama is in New York attending the UN General Assembly.
Under section 129 of the 2013 Constitution, the Commissioner of Police is appointed by the President, on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission following consultation with the minister responsible for the Fiji Police Force.
