LABOUR shortage is one of the key reasons why sugarcane farmers in the West are not able to harvest their crop.
This is the word from the president of the Lautoka Cane Producers Association, Praveen Singh.
"We understand that the Fiji Sugar Corporation has voiced its concern about the slow supply of cane to Lautoka. The reason for this is that we are having serious labour issues," Mr Singh said.
"We now have a situation where labourers harvest on one day and load on the next because the numbers are not there."
Mr Singh said another issue faced by cane growers was the fact that cane cutters refused to harvest crop unless the fields were burned to reduce foliage and bee nests.
