MACUATA paramount chief Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on parents in his province to support preschool teachers in their areas.
Speaking in the iTaukei language at the opening of the Early Childhood Education Centre over the weekend, Ratu Wiliame said some preschool teachers were not paid for their work so parents had a duty to support them in their work.
Ratu Wiliame thanked the government for its efforts to ensure preschool teachers were paid.
He said it was the duty of parents to support the work of pre-school teachers in nurturing young leaders, citing the new Constitution held a clause which recognises every child's right to quality education.
As well, the chief encouraged parents to know their roles as protectors of their young ones, particularly in light of cases where children were exploited.
He said pointing fingers and blaming others was not the way to get around such issues.
Ratu Wiliame told parents that if they wanted to avoid such situations they must guard the safety and security of their children well.
