SEVEN females were among the 28 officials that sat for the national referees exam at the Fiji Football Association headquarters in Suva yesterday.
Referees assessor Balram Nair, who co-ordiunated the exam, said the number of referees in the Southern Division had increased.
He added the interest shown by females in officiating was good sign.
"We have some new referees who have come to sit for the exam," he said.
"Some are school students and then we have seven females.
"The number of females who are taking up refereeing is a good sign for the sport in the country."
He said the results of the exam, which was also carried out in the Western and Northern Division, would be released next week.
"Those who pass the exam will become members of the Fiji Football Referees Association.
"We are expecting a good number but it will all depend on how they did in their test."
Next week, the referees, both new and senior, will be part of a refresher course.
Director of referees Paresh Kishore said the course was in preparation for the Inter-District Championship and the new soccer season.
