RAJ Sant took out the inaugural Victoria Courts Squash Club Beginners Tournament after he beat Siaosi Kafononga 3-1 in the final on Thursday night.
Victoria Courts (VC) Squash Club treasurer Kee Fong said Victoria Courts was full as almost 50 players and supporters turned up for the finals of the Williams and Goslings-sponsored tournament.
He said the event was a huge success with over 30 participants of which over 80 per cent had never played the sport competitively before.
"Raj Sant won the main cup final in an exciting match against 18-year-old student, Siaosi Kafononga," he said.
"Although, young Siaosi was clearly the fitter and faster player, the experienced Sant was able to control the game better and did enough to secure the title however both players did exceptionally well and are now due for promotion to the next grade."
In the third place play-off, Pastor Maveni Kafononga, overcame a spirited Doctor Alipate Vakamocea 3-2.
"Doctor Vakamocea, with his never say die attitude chased every ball until the end and made several spectacular dives and slides.
"In the Bowl competition, Edwina Hill almost upset Amini Vulaono who won 3-2.
"It was Vulaono's hard hitting style that won the game for him, while Hill's unpredictable placing of the ball that has Vulaono in trouble in several instances."
Fong added the event could become an annual event in the capital city.
