International Peace Day was celebrated yesterday with a memorial mass for peacekeepers around the world by two sectors of the Holy Family church in Labasa.
A helmet symbolising the peacekeepers was presented at the church altar by soldiers to be blessed and sanctified.
After mass, the members enjoyed a family fun day at Holy Family Primary School grounds.
The theme colour of the day was blue to symbolise peace.
Holy Family Parish elder Josefa Vasakula said they decided to celebrate the day because it was in line with this year's Catholic calendar's Year of Faith.
"It also is in line with the Pope's wishes for an end to the conflict in Syria," he said.
"We felt the need to be united in faith and as a people in order to make an impact to the outside world.
"It starts with us as individuals and the people that we love, and what we can do to ensure that peace is maintained around us."
"The ceremony this morning was very emotional taking into account the families that are mother and father-less because of duty. We at Sector 1 and Sector 6 take this time to salute these heroes and we pray for them and their families," Mr Vasakula said.
