FORMER Fiji 7s coach Peni Veidreyaki believes culture shock will be one of the major hurdles Ben Ryan will need to overcome in his bid to build a winning combination.
Veidreyaki, who coached the team during the inaugural IRB Sevens World Series in 1999-2000, said the language barrier would be another factor that the new 7s coach would face.
He said Ryan's appointment for three years was a surprise.
"Obviously the Fiji Rugby Union is targeting the 2016 Olympics," Veidreyaki said.
"I don't know if there is a non-performance clause in his contract. But what will happen if the results are not as expected. The previous coaches were all on performance based contracts.
"In saying that, Ben has proved himself. In Fiji he will get an abundance of talent. He knows the game well.
"FRU has appointed him for three years and it is a bold step. We now have to support him."
Ryan is expected to be in the country next month for the FIJI Water Centennial International 7s.
