GENDER inequality remains an issue in society and for Seruwaia Navukitu, it is something she wants to raise awareness of.
For the Ra lass, while gender equality has improved over the years, more could still be done.
"There is still an element of gender inequality that exists within our societies," she said.
"Women and men have their rights in our society but there are also minority groups whose rights we also need to look at and fight for."
She said this was the second time she was a contestant at a festival.
"I wanted to be part of the Sugar Festival just to continue from my experience at the Bula Festival.
"I like new challenges and being part of a contest is a challenge on its own."
The 19-year-old added her shy nature was also something she wanted to improve on.
"I'm naturally shy and being part of a pageant where you have to address large crowds is something that is very challenging for someone like me and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to be part of this.
"Through this I want to build up my self-confidence and advocate issues that are important to me," she said.
