IN controlling poaching activities in Vanua Levu waters, a group of fish wardens has been encouraged to help the Fisheries Department identify ways to ensure the marine ecosystem is not exploited.
This week, 46 wardens are attending a training program facilitated by the department and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) on Mali island.
At the opening session on Tuesday, acting Northern principal fisheries officer Joji Vakawaletabua said it was an opportunity for the wardens to learn more about the Fisheries Act and what was required of them as wardens.
"The knowledge they will gain from the training will empower them to become active wardens in their respective communities," he said.
More similar programs will help in the preservation of the marine ecosystems.
