Update: 6:20PM CANE supply to the Labasa Mill would be boosted by the arrival of a new locomotive, which would help ease transportation problem in the area.
Mill manager Christopher Karia said the Australian-made locomotive, received by the mill management and staff last week, would basically assist them in the supply of cane.
"The locomotive will serve cane farmers in Wainikoro, Daku and Bucaisau who use rail trucks to transport cane to the mill," Mr Karia said.
"We noticed that there was an imbalance in the ratio of cane lorries and rail trucks carting cane to the mill and that's why a new locomotive was essential to supply cane on time.
"This is a powerful transport that can pull numerous rail trucks in one trip. This is another part of our project aimed at assisting farmers and at the same time, boost cane supply for production," he said.
Meanwhile, farmers in the Wainikoro area have welcomed the new transport.
Farmer Sarda Prasad said it would enhance their work in terms of transporting cane to the mill on time.
