JONETANI Ralulu came in the second half for Tuva and kicked the winning penalty as they beat Tovolea 13- 10 in one of the T16 quarter-finals of the Nadroga club rugby knockout stages at Lawaqa Park yesterday.
It was anybody's game until the last minute as both teams, featuring several Nadroga reps, tried to outdo each other.
While Ralulu was on target with his boot, his opposite number Jiuta Lutumailagi had an off day as he missed two kickable penalties which could have changed the final score.
Referee Rusi Tuipelehaki said Tovolea was guilty of several high tackles which went against them in the penalty count.
But the Nadroumai-based side was awarded a penalty try after a Tuva player was guilty of not binding in the scrum.
The Tuva forwards rattled the opposition pack in the set-pieces but the introduction of Nadroga reps Ratu Penijamini Makutu and Eneri Lotawa for Tovolea late in the second spell paid dividend for the side as they dominated the close contact area and gained territory from bulldozing runs.
In other T16 quarter-finals Gaunavou was too strong for neighbours Vunavutu 24-8 while Noitoga One edged Ratu Filise 14-7.
Davetalevu pipped Highlander 9-6 after both teams were forced to go for penalty kicks when neither of them scored a point in sudden death.
