AWARENESS programs around the topic of cyclone preparedness have been conducted in flood-prone areas in the Western Division.
Aimed at minimising the impact of damage after natural disasters, the proactive approach also highlighted awareness around flooding in those areas, according to an Information Ministry statement.
The awareness programs, the statement highlighted, were the result of the success of the National Climate Change Summit last month at Narewa Village in Nadi.
A simulation exercise carried out by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development will be conducted in other villages in Nadi such as Sabeto, Navoci, Namotomoto, Yavusania and Nawaka with the assistance of the National Disaster Management Office.
Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said the exercise would be part of a holistic approach towards ensuring no lives were lost in cases of natural disasters, especially as a result of negligence.
"Just like Cyclone Evan last year, the government wants to ensure that no lives are lost in floods and other disasters," he said.
