POLICE are investigating the death of a 17-year-old in a road accident at Malolo, Nadi, on Wednesday night.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said a 44-year-old company director was taken into custody in relation to the tragedy.
She said the deceased was standing on the side of the road with a friend when the vehicle driven by the 44-year-old suspect allegedly hit him.
"It is alleged the vehicle the suspect was driving went off the road while in the process of trying to overtake another vehicle," said Ms Naisoro.
"A post mortem will be conducted while the suspect remains in custody."
The road death toll stands at 27 compared to 31 for the same period last year.
Meanwhile, a home invasion at Hedstrom Place in Lautoka resulted in the hospitalisation of 69-year-old grandmother, Muniamma Choy.
House girl Malti Devi, 59, claimed the victim was alone at home when attacked by two masked men. She said the suspects broke a window in the kitchen to enter the house and attacked Mrs Choy who was asleep in her bedroom.
"This is the first time such a thing has happened and I feel sorry for the old lady," said Mrs Devi.
"She was badly injured in the face and I really don't know what the intention of the attackers is."
She said the victim was rushed to the hospital by police.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said a taskforce team was formed to search for the two suspects.
