THE national women's volleyball side settled for the bronze medal in the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna yesterday.
They beat a spirited Papua New Guinea side 3-1 in the third-place play-off at the Kafika Hall in Hahake.
Fiji won the first set 25-15 and before PNG shocked the Fijians by winning the second set 25-18.
The third set was a seesaw battle that saw the lead change 12 times. Eventually, Fiji scraped through 25-23 and they went on to win the fourth set 25-14.
Coach Kenneth Lidise said his girls played their hearts out to win the bronze.
"We have a lot of new players and we are working on developing them," he said.
"Before we had left Fiji, I had said that if we do win a medal it would be a bonus so this is that bonus."
He said the young girls got the much-needed exposure to international competition.
"For most of them this was their first international competition and they have acquired the much-needed international experience."
Lidise said at times he had to remind the girls to remain focused, work on defence and stick to the basics.
