POLICE have failed in their task to keep a hold on convict Josua Naivalu as he escaped from custody on Tuesday morning.
The escape has prompted the police force to put together a team to lead the recapture of the escapee.
In a police statement yesterday, chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said there was no excuse for the incident which happened on Tuesday.
"We failed in our duty and there's no other excuse we can give at this point so our focus will be on the recapture mission that is now being headed by a special taskforce team," ACP Tudravu said.
"As we don't take these types of occurrences lightly, an internal investigation is also underway headed by a senior officer to find out what happened as obviously we were caught sleeping on the job."
Police are calling on members of the public to contact 917 or their nearest community post or police station with any information that could help locate Naivalu.
