THE Lautoka City Council will keep a close eye on its properties now that CCTV cameras have been installed.
Special administrator Praveen Bala said the installation of cameras within the central business district area of the Sugar City would enable the council to also monitor traffic offences.
"Everything is monitored on the cameras including properties that the council owns," he said.
"Apart from the traffic offences, we can also look at all the other illegal activity that is going on in the CBD area.
"This includes the stealing or vandalising of council property."
Launched last Thursday, he said the $45,000 cameras had made their work a lot easier.
"Aside from our council officials on the ground monitoring work, the cameras have become another set of eyes for us.
"At the moment the cameras are only installed in the CBD area and not outside of the city boundaries," Mr Bala said.
He added monitoring would also be done by the Lautoka Police Station.
While launching the five closed circuit TV cameras, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said the focus was on keeping citizens and businesses safe.
