POLICE have arrested the driver of a vehicle they believe hit and killed 30-year-old Tavilata Qaranivalu in an alleged hit and run accident at Nakabuta Rd on the Seaqaqa-Savusavu highway last weekend.
Spokeswoman Ana Naisoro yesterday said following information received, the driver was arrested in Nadawa, Suva.
On Monday, vehicles boarding outbound inter-island vessels were investigated by police in relation to the alleged accident.
"The driver was arrested in Nadawa and the vehicle he was driving has been seized and is now at the Nasinu Police Station," Ms Naisoro said.
"The post-mortem examination of the deceased has been conducted with the cause of death consistent with a motor vehicle accident.
"The suspect is in police custody."
Ms Naisoro said they were grateful to the assistance from the public that led to the arrest of the suspect.
It was earlier reported that a man who was driving through the highway alerted police between 1.30am to 2.45am when he saw Mr Qaranivalu's body on the roadside.
