NATIONAL reps Olaf Allen Junior and Roneel Prakash won the Srixon Cleveland-sponsored Fiji Amateur Championship for the fifth consecutive year at the Nadi Airport Golf Club yesterday.
The 36 holes event went down to the wire with Allen Jr and Prakash winning by one stroke from the brothers' combination of Anuresh and Amitesh Chandra.
Allen Jr and Prakash carded 147. The Chandra brothers finished with 148 while the father and son combination of Abid and Baarroon Hussain claimed third spot with 151.
Mohammed Aziz and Imran Ali won the overall nett division with a score of 141. Munesh and Praneel Prasad were the runner-up with 146.
Amitesh, the National Golf Association of Fiji secretary, said a total of 36 players participated in the tournament.
He said next year's foursomes would be held at the Fiji Golf Club.
"The focus will shift to the RC Manubhai Ba Open Championship starting on September 21," Amitesh said.
"We will be holding our annual general meeting in Nadi on Sunday. Our president Sitiveni Rabuka is seeking another term.
"We had a very successful season last year after successfully hosting the Fiji Open and participating at the Amateur World Cup in Turkey.
"At the Asian Amateur Championship Olaf and Vikrant Chandra made the cut after 36 holes.
"This was a first for a Pacific Island country. The achievement has come through our national development program.
"We have also signed with golf equipment supplier Srixon Cleveland for supply of golf equipment and accessories until 2015.
"National golf received funds from world governing body R&A to assist all clubs affected by cyclone in December last year.
"The Nadi, Ba, Lautoka, Vatukoula and Labasa golf clubs have benefited from this."
