DIGICEL Fiji is funding a $97,000 refurbishment of the CWM Hospital's maternity unit.
And it is the employees of the mobile network who led the initiative.
Sister Aliote Galuvakadua, the hosiptal's acting nursing manager, said they were grateful for the support, which includes medical equipment, beds, a food-warmer trolley, and the replacement of toilets, showers and floor tiles.
"This renovation will allow us to have a separate room for nurses to change in, and a special room for our mothers to be examined and treated," she said.
Sister Galuvakadua said the ward faced up to 900 deliveries per month from March to July this year.
Digicel commercial director Andrew Skelton said the employees put together a proposal as part of an internal competition in the Digicel Group.
"Out of over 100 projects submitted by the Digicel group, the CWM Hospital in Fiji won, and hence we have our $US50,000 which we can now spend which is fantastic," Mr Skelton said.
He said corporate bodies have an obligation to invest in the communities they work.
The Carpenters group, Dulux Fiji and Punjas are also contributing to the project, which is planned to take six weeks to complete.
