THE Fiji Police Force is still concerned with the number of drivers arrested for being under the influence of alcohol.
And to curb this influx, the force is training its traffic officers to upgrade their skills and knowledge when arresting drunk drivers.
Force director traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra said 26 officers from the Southern, Central and Eastern divisions completed a five-day breathalyser course at the Nasova Police Academy last Saturday.
SSP Mishra said the course for traffic officers was a requirement under the LTA Act.
"After completing the course, they become certified breathalyser testers," he said.
SSP Mishra said officers could only be certified if they were trained and acquired the skills and knowledge.
"It is evidential equipment and requires right procedure and process," he said.
"All the officers are now qualified breathalyser operators to test a person who has been arrested from road side and brought to the lab to be tested."
