SEED farmer Devesh Prashneil Nath of Nadi is a happy man after winning the 2013 Young Farmer of the Year award at the Crest Agriculture Show in Lautoka on Friday.
The 26-year-old attributed his win to his passion for agriculture and a keen eye on growing commercial trends.
"I am very happy about the award. It represents five years of hard work and just sticking to what you believe in," he said.
Mr Nath, who is also the owner of Devesh and Bahros Farm, started his seedling farm in 2008, an initiative taken after years of seeing his father tending to their sugarcane farm.
"Apart from being a sugarcane farmer, he also worked with the Agriculture Ministry for 26 years," he said of his father.
"I was inspired to go into agriculture because it has been such a big part of my life."
"We started with a small greenhouse and from there we managed to increase the farm.
"We now have about 10 hectares of land. I have more greenhouse sheds to raise papaya and eggplant seedlings and I supply to vegetable farmers from Sigatoka to Tavua, NGOs and corporate bodies."
The young farmer of the year said he hopes to expand his business and tap into the export market.
