THE PANPA Awards held in Sydney, Australia last month proved to be a night of success for Fiji's newspapers.
With stiff competition from the likes of the most respected newspapers in the Asia Pacific region, Fijian newspapers saw achievements in multiple categories.
The Fiji Times Ltd's Kaila! publication won the young reader's award, one of the most prestigious accolades concerning the development of young readers.
It almost saw equal success in the Sunday Paper of the Year category during the awards.
Hank Arts, the general manager of The Fiji Times, congratulated the whole team for their efforts, stating that "all finalists are to be complimented on achieving excellence. The newspaper business is facing significant challenges in the media environment internationally, but even more so in Fiji. It was particularly pleasing to see The Fiji Times being recognised among the best in the Asia Pacific region".
The Fiji Times chief photographer, Michelle Wilson, was nominated as a finalist in the News Photography awards for her piece entitled Heartache. Not only did her achievement mark a first for the newspaper it was in the face of a highly competitive field, with other nominees including those from the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph.
Other categories that achieved finalist status for 2013 were Cause Related Marketing for The Fiji Times Focus features and Journalism and the Daily Newspaper of the Year category.
