NINE-MONTH-OLD Jaoji Vunibola was given a new lease of life by local and visiting doctors.
Jaoji was diagnosed with a lung infection that was congenital.
"This was a once in a lifetime chance for us because his condition was really very severe," mum Kelera Vunibola said.
"One of the most frightening things I remember was he had to be admitted straight after he was born.
"We were always in and out of hospital because of his condition and now, I am so glad he will be able to live a normal life.
"He always had trouble breathing and whenever he started coughing, there was a wheezing sound in this chest.
"I am just praying now that he gets better quickly and I can take him home soon."
Jaoji was treated by a team of three paediatric surgeons from the Auckland Children's Hospital, alongside local surgeons.
Dr Josese Turagava, the local surgeon with the team, said they removed part of Jaoji's lung to remove the infection.
"He is okay now and on the road to recovery," he said.
