Update: 7:55PM THE new Constitution for the first time meets the standards of the worlds great democracies and will join their ranks.
This was highlighted by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama during his address at the Presidential assent of the Constitution at Government House today.
"We now have a Constitution that meets the test of a genuine democracy, that upholds the legal and moral basis of a common and equal citizenry without losing individuality or culture," Commodore Bainimarama said.
He said it took Fiji 43 years and three constitutions to get here.
"But now, finally, it's happened. And its cause for immense celebrations."
