A NEW dialysis centre will soon open at the Lautoka Hospital.
Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma confirmed this saying it would be set up at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit in a week's time.
"There's one already in CWM and the next place we want to have a unit like this is in Labasa," Dr Sharma said.
He said the centre was part of the ministry's effort to rationalise its services and ensure the public received the best health services.
"I was in Labasa last week and there were 35 new cases of N-Stage kidney disease, only one is alive.
"We have had discussions last week with the board of visitors at Labasa with a view to set up a dialysis facility in Labasa and we will negotiate this next week.
"That will complete the picture of diabetic care in the country."
He said training was also provided to those who worked in the specialised field.
"Recently, we had a group that came from Singapore to train nurses at the Western Dialysis Centre in Nadi and all those from the Kidney Foundation and from within the hospital system."
The new centre will open later this month.
