HOLY Cross College student Diama Maramanikaibau clinched the Pacific Mini Games women's high jump gold medal for Fiji on day two of competition yesterday.
The Yaroi villager of Savusavu jumped a height of 1.63m to finish ahead of the New Caledonia jumper who settled for silver at 1.60m.
Earlier this year, Maramanikaibau smashed a 25-year-old record in the Coca-Cola Games in Suva.
She leaped 1.65metres to beat the old record of Senimili Toloi of Tailevu North College, which was set in 1998 and stood at 1.64 metres.
"I could not do the same today (yesterday) but I am really happy with the gold medal," Maramanikaibau said.
"I am lost for words. I knew the competition would come from New Caledonia and I was very nervous."
She said she had been training very hard for the event and had been focused on winning gold.
"I had been training very hard from the day I found out I would be competing at the Mini Games and I was looking forward to competing.
"Now that I have won the gold, I am so thankful to the Lord for giving me the strength and my coach for his guidance and my family members for their support."
