DEFENDING champions Gold Darts made a winning start to its Vodafone Suva/Lami League campaign at Defence Club in Suva on Monday night.
The Lami-based side defeated Just Darts 7-4 in its opening pool match but will face tough competition from its Pool B opponents Wild Bulls, Procera and Radial Darts.
Lami League top finisher Wild Bulls also made a good start beating Radial Darts, the number two team in Suva League, by 8-3.
Radial without their mentor and team captain Prem Chand couldn't find its footing but the side is expected to bounce back in the remaining rounds of competition.
Suva champion Team Finance defeated Combine Bros I which was without the services of veteran players Nadeem Tahir and team captain Joe Tokona 8-3.
There were many 140s scores recorded, however the top score was 171 by Moses Fong from the Traps team which recorded an 8-3 win over Combine II.
Mervyn Low of Traps equalled the highest finish of 80.
Fiji Darts Association president Nyla Alfred was impressed with the turnout and scores in the opening round.
Alfred said judging from Monday night's performance, some teams had prepared themselves well during the month break.
"High scores have been thrown and good finishes have been recorded," she said.
"We also thank Vodafone Fiji Limited for their continued support for darts. They have shown to the sporting fraternity that they also assist smaller federations like ours and for this we are very grateful."
Fifteen teams are part of this year's competition.
