FORMER Fiji middleweight champion Etuate Rabuka will be laid to rest in Suva today.
Rabuka, who passed away last week, was suffering from an illness. He is related to former Fiji prime minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Boxing Commission of Fiji director Malakai Veisamasama said it was a sad moment for the sport in the country.
"He is one boxer who also stamped his mark as a champion during his era when boxing was at its peak in the country," Veisamasama said.
"Most of our former boxers like Leweni Waqa have passed away and now we have lost another.
"We are sad about the news and we offer our condolences to the family."
Veisamasama said it was the boxers of yesteryear who had shaped the sport.
He said despite the sad news, Rabuka's legacy would live on.
"The success of boxing now is because of these boxers who dedicated their talents and unique understanding of the art of boxing. Rabuka's memories will live on."
Rabuka is survived by his wife, son and three grandchildren.
