THE Fiji National Rugby League plans to expand the sport in the Northern Division next year.
This is after the successful introduction of the sport in the Ra province a couple of years ago.
Last month's Vodafone Cup grand final featured two Western teams — Sigatoka Electric Sabeto Roosters and KBL Saru Dragons — and signaled a shift in the powerbase from the Eastern Conference.
FNRL chairman Peni Musunamasi said the new Top Eight format, introduced this year, was here to stay.
He said they would also stick to the club competition rather than making it a district event.
"Expanding the sport to Vanua Levu is in the pipeline. The development officers are going to Macuata to do development work.
"We are combining with the Fiji Sports Commission and Toyota to develop the sport further.
"We would like to see a competition in place for the North next year.
"But there are some areas that we need to tidy up on in terms of development."
