A PHOTOGRAPH taken in the blue abyss of Fiji's Tavarua Island last year was given the Athlete's Choice Award at last week's 2013 Red Bull Illume competition results.
The photo, snapped by professional US-based photographer Morgan Maassen, captures seven athletes waiting on their surf boards in Tavarua waters, for the next wave.
The competition, dubbed the world's largest action and adventure sports photography contest, revealed their results in Hong Kong after a panel of 50 judges deliberated over who would win what.
According to online surfing website TransworldSURF, Mr Maassen, 22, was handed the prize, categorised "Lifestyle by Leica", although the overall prize was awarded to German photographer Lorenz Holder, who snapped "a snowboarder riding a giant satellite dish," the website reported.
"As overall winner, Holder received … a prize worth over $40,000 in total. He also won the experimental category," it reported yesterday.
According to the Daily Mail UK website, an illuminated night time exhibition of the images was expected to be shown in the US in the autumn season as a tribute to all winning and notable photographs.
"A total of 28,257 shots were submitted by 6417 photographers from 124 countries.
"The top 50 images will tour the world as a unique illuminated night-time exhibition," TransworldSURF reported.
