IT is estimated that about 500,000 tonnes of cane will be crushed by the Lautoka mill to produce between 50,000 and 60,000 tonnes of sugar.
These figures were revealed by Lautoka Cane Producers Association executive manager Arvind Singh.
"Farmers are quite happy at the start of the mill and cane cutting is going into smooth transition," he said.
Despite the incident at the mill two months ago, when the support structure of an evaporator containing hot water collapsed and resulted in the death of a worker, Mr Singh said crushing was going well since the mill restarted.
"It is expected to be a good season for farmers and the harvesting season is normalising as well.
"Farmers in Lautoka are coping with the high demand of cane for the mill."
